Terms and Conditions

The general objective of The Right Cut 2020 is to denounce and raise awareness through the audiovisual arts of the human rights violations as a consequence of the pandemic; and its economic, health, social and political effects that compromise the quality of life of citizens.

  • Anyone over the age of 18 with videos framed by COVID-19 on human rights and the pandemic is eligible to participate.
  • Participation can be individual or group, establishing in the second case an official representation with the identity of one of the participants.

Selection stages

  • The works presented must have a title.
  • The works presented cannot violate in any way the quarantine or distancing measures stipulated by the government of their country of origin in relation to the pandemic by COVID-19.
  • The works carried out must be oriented to respond to the theme of this contest, that is, to expose a theme regarding the right to freedom of expression and the defense of human rights around the pandemic by COVID-19. Any work that is not directly or indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic will be rejected.
  • The video must be professionally recorded especially for this festival. Previously created videos will only be accepted if they have been filmed during the quarantine period and if they exactly match the requested final result. Which must consider the three stages of realization:
    1. Script writing (What do I want to convey and how?)
    2. The recording of the material (with interpreters or without acting, with good lighting and clear sound, etc.)
    3. Editing (include title and credits, connect musical themes and sounds, edit the sequences that require it, etc.).
  • The works can be documentary or fiction.
  • Videos must be original and independent, taking into account freedom of expression as the main theme and the artistic aspect as a cinematographic authorial work. All work containing pornographic content will be disqualified.
  • The call is open from Monday, June 22, 2020 to Saturday, November 15, 2020. Videos can be sent through the YouTube platform with a 16: 9 format and a minimum resolution of 1280 x 720, and even better with a resolution 1920 x 1080.
  • The video on the YouTube platform must be public.
  • It is essential that each participant fill out the Registration Form. In the case of a group registration, the contest organization assumes as the winner and creditor of the prize the person who appears as representative in the registration form.
  • A participant can enter multiple videos. Each video must be registered particularly respecting all the steps and requirements with a registration form for each job.
  • The minimum duration of the shorts (Total Running Time TRT) will be 1 minute (5 ‘) and the maximum duration of 6 minutes (6’) with the credits included.
  • The music used in the video must be free of copyright or original of the participants. The sources of the musical pieces must be cited in the “Video information” section in the registration form so that their condition is verified by the organizers. Likewise, if they are original songs or those belonging to a group or author, a transfer of copyright or communication clause must be attached where the author or authors recognize them as their own and grant the right to use them in the videos. The pertinent mention in the credits of the works and their intellectual owners must also be respected.
  • Participation in the contest implies full acceptance of these regulations and the decision of the jury, whose interpretation corresponds to its members. Any breach of the deadlines or procedures reflected in these rules will deprive the participant of the enjoyment of the prizes.

Awards stages

  • The award jury in each category will be made up of personalities, professionals from different disciplines and academics of cinema. The ruling of the pre-selection committee will be reported on November 27 a December 1, 2020.
  • Contestant participants agree that the organizers and allies of the contest may broadcast and organize screenings of their videos on a strictly cultural or academic basis, without commercial purposes or for profit.
  • The finalist videos will be displayed on the contest page from November 27, 2020 and will be evaluated and awarded by a jury made up of personalities, professionals from different disciplines and academics of cinema, for the selection of the two winners, this announcement will will take place on December 3 a December 5, 2020.
  • The jury has the power to consider the contest deserted if the works received do not meet the expected quality criteria.
  1. From June 22 to November 15, participants must fill out the registration form once they have hosted their videos, in a quality of no less than 1280 x 720 pixels, on the YouTube platform. It is important to remember that the video link must be indicated on the form. The video must be subtitled in English.
  2. The organizers will send a registration confirmation email after receiving all the requirements from the participant (confirmation of the link on YouTube, registration form completed with all the required information).
  3. The videos will be pre-selected by a specially appointed Committee that will choose the finalist videos. The decision of the pre-selection committee will be reported on November 27 a December 5, 2020. The finalists will receive a diploma through the email indicated on their registration form.
  4. Upon receiving this email, the participant must send the email info@therightcut.org a 15-30 second trailer for the purpose of promoting the contest in networks.
  5. The award jury will report its ruling on December 3 a December 5, 2020.

You can shoot with a mobile phone or a tablet. You can use accessories such as a microphone, removable lenses, stabilizer, filters, etc.

The duration of the video may not be less than 1 (one) minute, nor exceed 6 (six) minutes, including titles and credits.

You can participate with videos about resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and / or the denunciation and defense of human rights during this period.

All audiovisual forms are accepted: fiction, documentary and also all genres: romance, horror, science-fiction, western, drama, period, thriller, Z-movie, comedy, action, war film, etc., as well as stop-motion , time lapse, etc.
